Darren Jernigan

The Tennessee State House of Representatives is made up of 26 Democrats and 73 Republicans giving the Republicans a super-majority in the House. This means that even if only Republicans reported to the House floor without the minority party, they could still conduct business and pass bills. Being a Democrat in such an environment is not without its challenges but I have been able to set an agenda and have passed more than 30 bills for the citizens of our district and the state. My agenda is set on requests, input, and feedback I receive from the citizens of our district. I do my best listen to your needs and work to implement policy that will benefit our district and the state.

I have a philosophy that a good idea is a good idea regardless of which side of the aisle it originated. I have learned, as Howard Baker put it, "sometimes the other guy is right". I believe the word "compromise" is not a dirty one. I have a reputation of working across the aisle as we tackle complicated issues facing Tennessee, as evidenced by my appointment from Republican leadership to chairman of a sub-committee, the first Democrat in eight years to do so.

It is your right as a voter to know where I stand on key issues. To that end, I have listed below areas of policy, as well as issues within that topic. If you have a question on an issue I have not addressed, please email with your questions or concerns at darren@darrenjernigan.com and I will do my best to address them.
